The 5th Season!

We're in it! You know - Late Summer - the fifth season of the year.

If our seasons were laid on top of the Yin/Yang symbol with Winter at the bottom and Summer on the top, we'd be at the intersection of the white part (yang) and black part (yin) on the top right of the symbol. Or at about 1-2 o'clock on a ticking clock. This time of year is super special because we are experiencing a transition from the firey, masculine, outward flow of Yang energy that has been building up since Spring, to the more inward, feminine Yin energy of fall and winter. 

Basically, each season has an element, certain organ systems, and sensory-stuff that come into the spotlight with it. 

Late Summer is Earth time, Baby!! The Earth element is what helps us to feel grounded and secure within ourselves before we go out into that big, bad world! With that comes self-reflection and ability to feel accomplished with what you've done the last few crazy months.

Maybe you've been feeling extra exhausted lately, or kinda bloated, or experiencing a bit of digestive upset? Maybe you've recently experienced some swelling maybe in your legs or lymph nodes? Or a little edema? These are all traditionally signs that your Earth is unbalanced. 

The good news? Balancing our Earth is all the self-care things that we need to do anyways!! Ever notice how people like to take vacation in August? It ain't no coinki-dink! No siree! It's because we naturally want to slow the heck down this time of year and give ourselves a little energy-break.

So basically I'm telling you to indulge yourself for a few weeks and do any/all of the following:

  • Sleep in!
  • Take a stroll!
  • Get a massage!
  • Meditate!
  • Journal!
  • Unplug!
  • Read a book!
  • Take a nap! 
  • Go Fishing!
  • Go to bed early!
  • Skip the gym!
  • Take a deep breath!
  • Play some music!

Or anything else you find relaxing.

It's also no coinkidink that foods like butternut squash and pumpkin are coming into season - wanna know why? Because Mother Earth is like freakin' smart and awesome and she gave us the plants that nourish our Earth element in the same season that we need it the most! WHAT!!

The Stomach and Spleen are the organ systems that get the spotlight during Late Fall, and well, the S&S team LURVESES yellow-orange, sweet things just like pumpkins and butternut squash! You can also find these flavors/colors in foods like: 

  • Sweet potatoes
  • Peaches
  • Garbanzo Beans
  • Carrots
  • Quinoa
  • Clarified Butter/Ghee
  • Turmeric

So embrace your inner Mother Earth, take a nap and have a bunch of carrots over these next few weeks - you deserve it!
